About the area
Saundersfoot facts
Saundersfoot is an exposed stretch of the Swansea and Gower coastline, shaped by salt wind, sand and rock. It is part of the Haverfordwest, Tenby & the Pembrokeshire Coast area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.
- Parliament authorised the harbour and railway in 1829 to export anthracite coal.
- The narrow-gauge railway opened in 1834, linking the harbour to collieries at Stepaside and Kilgetty.
- Forms part of Swansea's coastline along the Bristol Channel, where the tidal range is among the largest in the world.
- Cliffs, dunes and shingle here support specialised plants that cope with salt, wind and shifting sand.
