About the area

Kilgetty facts

Kilgetty is a Gower-edge settlement of lanes, hedge banks, farmland and older stone boundaries. It is part of the Haverfordwest, Tenby & the Pembrokeshire Coast area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.

  • The village sits in the Pembrokeshire anthracite coalfield, with coal mined locally since medieval times.
  • Kilgetty Colliery operated from around 1843, closing and reopening before finally shutting in 1939.
  • Sits on or close to the Gower Peninsula, the United Kingdom's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, designated in 1956.
  • Field boundaries, lanes and older stone walls give the area its long-established rural pattern.
