Watch list

Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora

The orange garden crocosmia that has escaped into hedge banks and coastal paths all over Gower, forming solid corm mats that nothing else grows through.

How to identify it

  • Sword-shaped pleated leaves in dense fans
  • Arching sprays of orange trumpet flowers
  • Chains of corms just under the soil surface

Why it matters

  • Excludes native hedge-bank and cliff-top flora
  • Very persistent once the corm mat forms

How to control it

  • Dig out every corm — leaving one restarts the patch
  • Never tip crocosmia clearings over a hedge or on a lane
