About the area
Milford Haven facts
Milford Haven is an exposed stretch of the Swansea and Gower coastline, shaped by salt wind, sand and rock. It is part of the Haverfordwest, Tenby & the Pembrokeshire Coast area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.
- The town was founded in 1793 by Sir William Hamilton, who invited Quaker whalers from Nantucket to settle.
- It stands on one of the world's deepest natural harbours, used by Vikings from the 790s.
- Forms part of Swansea's coastline along the Bristol Channel, where the tidal range is among the largest in the world.
- Cliffs, dunes and shingle here support specialised plants that cope with salt, wind and shifting sand.
