About the area

Manorbier facts

Manorbier is an exposed stretch of the Swansea and Gower coastline, shaped by salt wind, sand and rock. It is part of the Haverfordwest, Tenby & the Pembrokeshire Coast area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.

  • The castle, founded in the late eleventh century by the de Barri family, was the birthplace of Gerald of Wales.
  • The Norman castle stands above the beach, with a postern gate that once gave access to the sea.
  • Forms part of Swansea's coastline along the Bristol Channel, where the tidal range is among the largest in the world.
  • Cliffs, dunes and shingle here support specialised plants that cope with salt, wind and shifting sand.
