About the area

Freshwater East facts

Freshwater East is an exposed stretch of the Swansea and Gower coastline, shaped by salt wind, sand and rock. It is part of the Haverfordwest, Tenby & the Pembrokeshire Coast area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.

  • An Iron Age promontory fort stands at East Cliff above the bay.
  • The bay was notorious for smuggling in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
  • Forms part of Swansea's coastline along the Bristol Channel, where the tidal range is among the largest in the world.
  • Cliffs, dunes and shingle here support specialised plants that cope with salt, wind and shifting sand.
