Cynwyl Elfed is a Gower-edge settlement of lanes, hedge banks, farmland and older stone boundaries. It is part of the Carmarthen, the Tywi & the Taf Estuary area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.
- The area has yielded Roman finds, including a statue of Diana, and was the centre of the commote of Elfed.
- The River Gwili, a tributary of the Tywi, rises nearby and runs through the village.
- Sits on or close to the Gower Peninsula, the United Kingdom's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, designated in 1956.
- Field boundaries, lanes and older stone walls give the area its long-established rural pattern.
