About the area
St Clears facts
St Clears is a Gower-edge settlement of lanes, hedge banks, farmland and older stone boundaries. It is part of the Carmarthen, the Tywi & the Taf Estuary area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.
- Norman knights built a motte-and-bailey castle here in the late eleventh century.
- The town stands where the Taf meets the Cynin, its priory church dating from around 1100.
- Sits on or close to the Gower Peninsula, the United Kingdom's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, designated in 1956.
- Field boundaries, lanes and older stone walls give the area its long-established rural pattern.
