About the area
Burry Port facts
Burry Port is an exposed stretch of the Swansea and Gower coastline, shaped by salt wind, sand and rock. It is part of the Llanelli, Burry Port & the Amman Valley area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.
- The harbour, designed by engineer James Green, opened in the 1830s to export anthracite and steam coal.
- The harbour on the Burry Inlet is now a marina, around which the town grew.
- Forms part of Swansea's coastline along the Bristol Channel, where the tidal range is among the largest in the world.
- Cliffs, dunes and shingle here support specialised plants that cope with salt, wind and shifting sand.
