About the area

Treorchy facts

Treorchy is a Gower-edge settlement of lanes, hedge banks, farmland and older stone boundaries. It is part of the Pontypridd, the Rhondda & Merthyr area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.

  • Treorchy grew with coal mining in the Rhondda Fawr valley in the nineteenth century.
  • The town is known for the Treorchy Male Choir, formed in 1883.
  • Sits on or close to the Gower Peninsula, the United Kingdom's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, designated in 1956.
  • Field boundaries, lanes and older stone walls give the area its long-established rural pattern.
