Merthyr Tydfil facts

Merthyr Tydfil is a built-up part of Swansea where housing, back lanes, walls and small pockets of open ground sit close together. It is part of the Pontypridd, the Rhondda & Merthyr area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.

  • Merthyr's ironworks, including Cyfarthfa, made it the largest town in Wales in the early nineteenth century.
  • Cyfarthfa Castle, built for the Crawshay ironmasters in 1824, is now a museum and park.
  • Part of the City and County of Swansea, served by Swansea Council for waste, roads and public land.
  • Terraced and semi-detached housing, back lanes and boundary walls are typical of this part of the city.
