About the area

River Tawe facts

River Tawe is a watercourse in the Swansea area, carrying water, seeds and soil downstream through the city and its valleys. It is part of Landore, Morriston & Plasmarl within the City and County of Swansea.

  • The Tawe rises in the Brecon Beacons and reaches the sea at Swansea.
  • The barrage at its mouth, completed in 1992, holds water in the lower river.
  • Drains part of the Swansea area, eventually reaching Swansea Bay and the Bristol Channel.
  • Water levels rise quickly after heavy rain, moving gravel, soil and plant material downstream.
