About the area

Glynneath facts

Glynneath is a Gower-edge settlement of lanes, hedge banks, farmland and older stone boundaries. It is part of the Neath, Port Talbot & the Neath Valley area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.

  • Coal mining began here in 1793, boosted by the Neath Canal, which had arrived in 1775.
  • The town lies on the River Neath at the head of the Vale of Neath, near waterfall country.
  • Sits on or close to the Gower Peninsula, the United Kingdom's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, designated in 1956.
  • Field boundaries, lanes and older stone walls give the area its long-established rural pattern.
