About the area
Aberavon facts
Aberavon is an exposed stretch of the Swansea and Gower coastline, shaped by salt wind, sand and rock. It is part of the Neath, Port Talbot & the Neath Valley area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.
- A wooden castle stood here around 1090, built by Caradog ab Iestyn and rebuilt in stone after 1153.
- Aberavon Beach is a three-mile Blue Flag strand on Swansea Bay, popular with surfers.
- Forms part of Swansea's coastline along the Bristol Channel, where the tidal range is among the largest in the world.
- Cliffs, dunes and shingle here support specialised plants that cope with salt, wind and shifting sand.
