About the area

Caerleon facts

Caerleon is a Gower-edge settlement of lanes, hedge banks, farmland and older stone boundaries. It is part of the Newport, Caerphilly & the Usk area, within about 30 miles of Swansea.

  • Caerleon was the Roman fortress of Isca, base of the Second Augustan Legion from around AD 75.
  • Its Roman amphitheatre and baths, beside the River Usk, are in Cadw's care.
  • Sits on or close to the Gower Peninsula, the United Kingdom's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, designated in 1956.
  • Field boundaries, lanes and older stone walls give the area its long-established rural pattern.
