Himalayan honeysuckle
Moderate riskLeycesteria formosa
A garden escape with pendulous maroon-and-white flowers that has jumped from borders into Swansea's lanes and woodland edges, forming dense bamboo-like stands from dropped berries.
How to identify it
- Upright green stems like thick bamboo canes, hollow when mature, 1.5–2m
- Hanging clusters of maroon bracts with small white flowers
- Dark purple berries in the same drooping clusters
- Oval, softly pointed leaves in opposite pairs
Why it matters
- Forms dense annual stands that crowd out hedgerow and woodland-edge flora
- Canes shade out seedlings and make paths impassable
How to control it
- Pull young plants whole — stems snap cleanly at the base
- Cut and treat established clumps, repeating for 2–3 years as seed germinates
- Clear before the berry clusters ripen in autumn
