Japanese knotweed vs Hedge bindweed
Both have heart-ish leaves and turn up in hedges and fences, but bindweed twines around other plants while knotweed stands up on its own canes.
Hedge bindweed (Calystegia sepium): Native climber — a garden nuisance, not a legal problem.
| Feature | Japanese knotweed | Hedge bindweed |
|---|---|---|
| Stems | Upright, hollow, bamboo-like canes with purple speckles and a zigzag shape | Thin, soft stems that twist anticlockwise around anything nearby |
| Leaves | Shield-shaped with a flat base, alternate along the zigzag stem | Arrow or heart-shaped with pointed back lobes |
| Flowers | Sprays of tiny creamy-white flowers, late summer | Large white trumpet flowers, single |
| Winter | Dead brown canes stay standing | Disappears; no canes left |
Quick test
Can it stand up without support? If it needs to climb something, it is bindweed.
